Barrydale is located on the famous Route 62 on the border of the Overberg and the Little Karoo of the Western Cape in South Africa. The village is named after Joseph Barry, a well-known merchant of the 19th century. It is easily accessible from different directions: from Montagu, which is the start of the Route 62. Also from the Garden Route, both from Swellendam and Oudtshoorn. It is situated at the northern end of the scenic Tradouw Pass. The pass, in addition to winding through the Langeberg Mountains, has many viewpoints. This trip is highly recommended!
The Origin Of The Cellar Restaurant In Barrydale
The restaurant started as a brandy ageing cellar. The brandy and wine would rest under the cool cement roof until the time came for it to be bottled. It produced spirits, in fact, like Oude Molen Brandy, Joseph Barry Brandy and the range of Southern Cape Vineyard Wines.
I couldn’t decide where I would like to sit! The outside terrace is in addition to being sunny, also, overlooking the Little Karoo landscapes. The inside of the restaurant, while cool under the cement roof, also with stacked wine barrels creates a beautiful ambience. The complete brewing room behind a glass wall is prominent and apparently on some days, one can see how the craft beers get brewed. I opted for a table inside overlooking the children’s play area. I enjoyed my Cucumber & Mint Gin & Tonic while Alexander made friends with some of the local kids. The play area is equipped with all sorts of toys and the only thing that could get him out of there was when he saw a puppy happily playing on the green lawn.
A BIG ups for The Cellar Restaurant in Barrydale for not only being child-friendly but also pet-friendly (to well-behaved pooches, that is!).
It Is All About The Food... And Drinks!
I requested two dishes to sample at the owner, Licha's recommendation. I was treated to their Brandy Glazed Beef Burger. How appropriate, being in a brandy cellar! It was served with a side salad, crispy onion rings on top and thick rustic cut chips on the side. A dish for the famished! Their vegetarian Roasted Vegetable & Chevin Salad is a feast for the eye. It is made with roasted beetroot, garlic, butternut, chevin cheese was as delicious as it was beautiful. The portions are generous and every bite is tasty.
A Wedding In The Little Karoo Perhaps?
My sense was that for the owners, Lichia and Wyand (who manage the restaurant themselves) and the entire staff it is all about the attention to detail and making sure that their guests have a relaxed and good time. They are open to suggestions and would tailor your plate of food to your liking. Apart from being a restaurant they also host weddings and functions at the restaurant.
